Thelma Berlin

BERLIN, Thelma Dunlap, 91, formerly of Cadiz, Ohio, passed away on Feb. 29, 2012, at Weyrich Health Care Center, Westminster Village, Scottsdale, Ariz.

She had been a resident of Arizona since 2004. She was born Aug. 7, 1920, in Nottingham Township, Harrison County, Ohio to Jacob Harrison "Harry" and Alice Moore Dunlap.

Thelma graduated from Cadiz High School in 1937 and was married to Henry Edmond "Ed" Berlin Aug. 16, 1941.

Thelma worked for E.M. Long Corporation after graduating from high school. She was employed by the Ohio Power Company while her husband served in the U.S. Army (Pacific Theater) in World War II. Under Pastor Ray Butler, she became the first salaried secretary for Drummond Methodist Church. She then served as a volunteer on the Planning Committee to develop a health center in Cadiz and later became the first administrative secretary for the Harrison Community Health Center. The health center later became accredited as Harrison Community Hospital. Thelma retired in 1986 from R&F Coal Company where she was a permitting supervisor responsible for surface mining permits from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for strip mining and reclamation activities.

Thelma was an active member of the Cadiz community. She was a member of Distaff and belonged to both the Women's Civic Club and Cadiz Business Women's Association. She was a 60+ year member of the Harrison Chapter, Ohio Order of the Eastern Star serving as both Worthy Matron of the local chapter and a state officer. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and an active member of the Lisle Jones Circle. She also held office in the Steubenville District of the Methodist Church. She was involved in many volunteer activities in the Cadiz community and school system including PTA, Band Parents, Cadiz Mining and Manufacturing Festival and Boosters Club.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, her husband, Ed, in 1989, and her brother, G. Dale Dunlap, of Annapolis, Md.

She is survived by a son, Dr.Jon Dale Berlin (Nancy), of Herndon, Va., and a daughter, Dr. Jane Berlin Theiler (Richard) of Scottsdale, Ariz. She has five grandchildren: Stephanie Berlin Gagnon (Christophe) of Montreal, Canada, Marisa Berlin Beard (Timothy) of Falls Church, Va., Eric Wesley Berlin (Marilyn) of Reston, Va., Devan Theiler Mourtos (Nicholas) of Sicklerville, N.J., and Dana Kristen Theiler of Bedminster, N.J. She was the proud great-grandmother of Addison Grace Beard, Timothy Donahue Beard V, and Ethan Wesley Berlin.

Visitation will be held at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home in Cadiz, Ohio, from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2012. Services will be officiated by Pastor Richard Hasley at Scott United Methodist Church in Cadiz at 11a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012. Burial will be at Cadiz Union Cemetery.
