Veterans park group to meet

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Veterans Memorial Park Foundation will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Staffileno's on the River.

The group will discuss its upcoming Night at the Races fundraiser, the Veteran of the Year dinner-dance set for April 28 and overall progress on the project.

All members are urged to attend, and everyone is welcome.

Public service district board has vacancy

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Commission is accepting letters of interest in a seat on the Brooke County Public Service District Board.

The three-member board oversees sewer and water service in certain areas of the county and meets at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at its office at 711 Charles St.

Letters of interest should be submitted to the office of Brooke County Clerk Sylvia Benzo at the Brooke County Courthouse.

The commission is expected to fill the seat at its March 13 meeting.

$900K sought in unpaid lunch money

COLUMBUS - Columbus schools are using a collection agency to help them recover delinquent lunch payments totaling roughly $900,000.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the schools are owed lunch money for nearly 6,000 students. Accounts that owe more than $50 for lunches since 2009 will be turned over for collection late next month. Most families owe just a few dollars. About 10 percent of the families that owe lunch money account for about 80 percent of the total owed, and that's the group that's being targeted.

Cleveland fire kills elderly man

CLEVELAND - Officials say an early morning house fire in Cleveland left an 84-year-old man dead.

Firefighters responding to an alarm around 5 a.m. Sunday found the man in an upstairs bedroom of the two-story house on the city's east side.

Assistant Fire Chief David McNeilly tells The Plain Dealer that the man was still alive when emergency crews arrived. He was taken by ambulance to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The man's name hasn't been released.
