STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's and men's basketball teams were swept Saturday in the Finnegan Fieldhouse by Penn State-Behrend.
The Lady Lions were taken to overtime, but escaped with a 68-60 victory, while the men had a much easier time, winning 55-35. The Lady Barons lost to Behrend by 39 points last month.
"It was a great game all the way," said FUS head coach Luke Heusel. "I'm incredibly proud of all the girls in the way that they battled back. We had a shot to beat one of the top AMCC conference teams, and that says a lot about the girls' improvement."
Kristin Belleque led the Barons with 21 points.
"Our star tonight was Kristin," noted Heusel. "She was a really big reason we were able to compete the way we did."
Hannah Flanagan and Lacey Huck each scored eight points for FUS.
"This game was not about what we didn't do right," said Heusel."Today's game was good for the women's basketball program. It shows that the girls want to play hard, and if they continue this way, we're going to keep getting better."
The Lady Barons are 2-20 overall and 2-14 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference,
For the men, Nolan Albrecht totaled 15 points and eight rebounds. Peter Mooney added nine points.
"Behrend is an extremely well-coached team," FUS head coach John Lamanna said. "They play sound, solid basketball and that is really the difference. We're still working on getting to that level."
Senior Night will be held Wednesday against LaRoche College. The men play at 6 p.m. and the women at 8 p.m.
