STEUBENVILLE - The Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow will be in Steubenville this week for those who'd like to find out how much they can get for antiques, collectibles or gold and silver lying around their house.
The roadshow will be at the Hampton Inn, 820 University Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
OVR spokesman Dennis Kouts said it's a good time to sell.
"Gold and silver markets have not been this strong for over 30 years," he said.
The OVR is a place where anyone in the community can connect with collectors from around the globe, he said. Specialists make offers based on rarity, collectability, condition and market value and if the price meets with the seller's approval, they'll pay "on the spot with no hidden fees."
Kosut said among their recent finds were a rare gold coin collection purchased for $107,000 and a letter written by George Washington to the doctor of his wife expressing his disdain toward the doctor's actions regarding her treatment. At a recent show in Ohio, he said a woman brought a letter from Abraham Lincoln that she'd been convinced for years was a fake and walked out $25,000 richer after finding out it was, in fact, authentic.
He said OVR specialists assess items free of charge.
Nearly all coins and paper currency, vintage jewelry, war memorabilia, musical instruments and toys made prior to 1970 are highly sought after.
"The Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow is able to offer good prices as it has its own refinery," Kosut said. "Refineries typically do not do business with the public; rather, they deal with precious metal accumulators like jewelry stores, pawn shops, dentist offices or industrial facilities that trade with some form of precious metal."
While the general public does not need to schedule an appointment, he said businesses that deal with precious metals are encouraged to call ahead and book a time to meet with a specialist.
The event is free, and there are no limits to the number of pieces a patron can bring.
