To the editor:
Special thanks to Dave Gossett for covering Steubenville City Council . Without his coverage, we, the taxpayers, would have no knowledge of what goes on in our government, as everything is introduced as an emergency, introduced one week and given three readings the next. That is the way of hearing no evil for their actions.
Tuesday's meeting was attended by a group asking if the city needs more subsidized housing. How many of us knew we are going to accept two more complexes to add to the 20 tax-exempt complexes that are already here? That would place the burden on we, the local taxpayers, to secure their right to live and impact our neighborhoods.
We all ask ourselves why we cannot attract national retailers to our community. The reason should be obvious - chains look at income levels to make sure they can turn a profit. Attracting more subsidized units hurts all of us. They look at average income and property values. Live by a unit run by a government entity and ask yourself if you have lost value in your investment.
I believe we all have.
