MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — Critics of the state's version of the Common Core education standards plan to hold a town hall forum in Bridgeport next week.

The forum is set for Aug. 24. The next day, state lawmakers begin three days of interim meetings in Bridgeport.

The forum is sponsored by West Virginians Against the Common Core. The group wants a moratorium on the new standards and objectives until further studies can be done.

Berkeley County Delegate Mike Folk tells The Journal ( ) that he plans to attend the forum. Folk says education officials are trying to do higher-level reasoning at an age when young children can't yet do it.

Interim state associate superintendent Clayton Burch says the standards aren't always well understood. But he says counties are moving ahead without a problem.
