USW retirees to hold annual picnic

FOLLANSBEE - The annual summer picnic for retirees of area United Steelworkers Union Locals 1190 and 2911 will be held at the Follansbee city park Tuesday. The picnic begins at 11 a.m.

Chesapeake establishes Canton office

CANTON - Chesapeake Energy Corp. announced the opening of a new field office Thursday at 400 Third St. S.E., Canton, to manage its growing natural gas and oil operations in the Utica shale, which includes most of Eastern Ohio.

The office is expected to have more than 70 employees to serve as the home base for development in gas and oil operations in Stark and surrounding counties. Canton-based staff is being hired.

The location is Chesapeake's first phase in building a regional work force. It will be an interim operations facility while Chesapeake looks for and develops a permanent field office.

Five rigs are working in Ohio now, and Chesapeake expects substantial growth beyond that in the next few years, with thousands of jobs to come.

Leadership course enrollment open

STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County's 2011-12 leadership program is open for enrollment.

The nine-month program begins Oct. 4 and is a cooperative effort of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, the Jefferson County Community Action Council and Eastern Gateway Community College.

Ambassadors to visit area businesses

STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is planning Chamber Appreciation Day for Oct. 18 or 19. Ambassadors, board members or staff of the chamber will visit all 476 investor businesses that day.
