WELLSBURG - Brooke County Special Olympians returned from the West Virginia Summer Games in Charleston with many medals and ribbons.
In the bocce singles competition, the following athletes earned medals: Margie Henthorn, gold; Lesly Schwertfeger, silver; Mark Lauck, silver; and Heather Ambrose, bronze. Donald Liposchak and Bea Bea Horoszk each placed fourth.
In the bocce doubles competition, Ambrose and Lauck received gold medals, Henthorn and Schwertfeger received silver; and Liposchak and Horoszk placed fourth.
In the area of track and field, Kay Ferrari, Marie Kosut and Mike Staats earned gold medals, Ed Kosut and Adam Cash earned silver medals; and Matt Elcesser earned a bronze for the 100-meter race-walk.
In the 400-meter race-walk, Kosut and Elcesser received gold medals, Ferrari and Cash received silver medals, Staats received a bronze, and Kosut placed fifth.
In the 800-meter race-walk Ferrari and Elcesser earned gold medals, Kosut and Staats earned silver medals, Cash earned a bronze and Kosut placed fifth.
Members of Brooke's golf team also were winners. Dan Adams, Andrew Rager and Drake Johnson each received gold medals, Jim Hunter and Steven Boley each received silver medals, and B.J. Griffin received a bronze.
Brooke County Special Olympics leaders thanked the Wellsburg Middle School Special Olympics Support Club for raising money for movies, soda and popcorn enjoyed by the athletes when they weren't competing in the summer games and SOS members Breanna Vanderpool and Rebecca Horner for attending the games to support Brooke County's participants.
