holding meeting

WEIRTON - The Ohio Valley Autism Network support group will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Weirton Medical Center's Starvaggi Board Room.

Library offers summer fun table

WELLSBURG - Children are invited to stop by the Follansbee Branch of the Brooke County Library on Tuesday and the Brooke County Library on Thursday and take part in their summer fun activity table, which includes crafts and activity sheets.

Evening Bible school offered

COLLIERS - Colliers United Methodist Church will hold a "Backstage with The Bible" vacation Bible school program from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 20-24.

A light dinner for children and parents will be offered before the program, which will involve crafts, games, songs and nightly sing-alongs with the Go Fish Guys.

Heroes focus of Bible school

WEIRTON - The Church of Christ at 612 Colliers Way, across from Weirton Medical Center, will host a "Heroes of Faith" vacation Bible school from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 13-17.

Each session will include stories, crafts, singing and refreshments. There is no charge.

First 'tenant'

celebrates birthday

WELLSBURG - Micha Tennant, the first person to move into Unity Apartments, was treated to a party with 52 friends, relatives and children on her 94th birthday.

Born in St. Marys, W.Va. in 1917, Tennant moved to Weirton in 1935. She is a member of the Weirton Church of the Nazarene and an avid quilter, having produced at least 500 quilts, according to friends.

Thrown by Alberta Barnett, the party included cake and refreshments and music by singer-guitarist Jerry Goodwin.

Church holding VBS

COLLIERS - Open Door Baptist Church will hold a Vacation Bible School from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 20-24 at the church, located on Eldersville Road.

Children from infants through sixth grade are welcome. All must be registered when they arrive and parents must provide contact information.

Tea Party scheduled in Wellsburg

WELLSBURG - There will be a Tax Tea Party from 10 a.m. to noon June 25 at the Wellsburg Town Square.

Speakers will include former state Del. Pat McGeehan, Dave Daubenmire and John Price.

Marie Hosdil of Steubenville for Liberty and dulcimer player Alice Whitehill will provide musical entertainment, playing a selection of Civil War-era pieces, in Civil War costume.

The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary met May 9 at the Knights of Columbus Hall with President Joan Spano presiding.

Chaplain Mary Ann Smith led devotions, and Darlene Kemp, second vice president, led in opening ceremonies

Several thank-you cards were read including from adopted veterans Ruth Coates and Gabriel Arlia; Dennis Kenny of Barboursville Veterans Home; and from Boatsie's Boxes for more than 900 bags of jelly beans and Easter cards for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Historian Marcy Spano passed photos out to each member.

Vice President Shirley Brecht collected donations for drawing prizes for the July 16 picnic at the Get Togethers Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek Road. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and something for the Farmers Table.

It was announced Boatsie's Boxes and Cabela's Sporting Goods will honor military heroes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m July 2 at Cabela's.

The next meeting will be held Sunday at the Knights of Columbus.

Festival booths available

FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Community Days Committee will be accepting applications for booths for this year's festival, which will be held July 8-10.

Applications can be picked up at the Follansbee City Building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

North End reunion set

WEIRTON - The eighth-annual Weir Avenue/North End/Dunbar Alumni Reunion will be held Aug. 19-20.

A get acquainted social will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Masonic Hall, and a block party will be held on Vermont Street and Weir Avenue Aug. 19.

William Curenton will coordinate a golf tournament the morning of Aug. 20.

A block social will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 20 on Vermont Street and Weir Avenue, and vendors will be available. The charge for vendor set-up is $20, and those interested should contact Earlene Jones at (304) 748-7834.

A dinner buffet and dance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Holiday Inn - Weirton. It is casual attire, and there will be no take-out.

The cost for the weekend is $50 per person, and T-shirts will be available for $12.

Weekly summer camp set

FOLLANSBEE - The Kids With Spirit Summer Camp will be held at Follansbee Park from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Wednesday from June 15 to Aug. 17.

Sponsored by Follansbee Presbyterian Church, the event is free for children in grades K-5 and includes dinner, games and a Bible story.

No reservations are necessary.

Class of '76 to hold reunion

FOLLANSBEE - The Brooke High School Class of 1976 will hold a 35-year reunion from 5 p.m. to midnight July 2 at the Follansbee Garibaldi Lodge.

There will be a mixer mingle on July 1 at Pier 12 with Hot Pursuit, SAM-H and a BHS super jam.

The cost is $40 per person, which includes both events and beer, wine and mixers on Saturday.

There will be free wings and veggies at the mixer.

City pool open

FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Park swimming pool will be open from noon to 7 p.m. throughout the week until Labor Day.

Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students, ages 6-17 and seniors 55 and older, with children under 6 admitted free.

Passes for Follansbee water customers are: $100 for a family of five in the same household with an additional $5 for each member after that, $65 for students, $75 for adults and $50 for seniors.

Passes for non-Follansbee water customers are: $125 for a family of five, $100 for adults, $80 for students, and $60 for seniors.

The pool is available for parties between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. for $65 per hour and $50 for non-profit organizations.

Tax information offered

WEIRTON - A free tax workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Mary H. Weir Public Library.

The workshop will offer assistance in calculating estimated tax payments for individuals who have recently received oil and gas lease monies and are unsure how much they are going to need to set back for tax purposes.

It also will cover claiming Neighborhood Investment Program tax credits and other tax credits for charitable donations.

Linda Viderman, a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs for 24 years will conduct the workshop, which is being organized by A Child's Place Court-Appointed Special Advocate.

Animal clinic announced

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Animal Clinic will be held June 13-17.

Rabies and other vaccinations for dogs and cats will be conducted from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the following locations: Hooverson Heights Fire Department, Monday; Colliers Fire Department shelter, Tuesday; Brooke County Animal Shelter in Beech Bottom, Wednesday; Bethany Fire Department, Thursday; and Wellsburg 1st Ward Park, Friday.

Rabies shots for dogs and cats are $8 each and are required by the state.

Pet owners also may pay $15 for vaccinations for cats against upper respiratory viruses and for dogs against distemper, hepatitis, parvo virus, leptospirosis and parainfluenza. The latter vaccinations aren't required but are recommended.

All animals should be brought on a leash or in a carrier.

All dogs 6 months or older must be licensed in Brooke County for a cost of $3 each.

Sports physicals offered

WEIRTON - Family Medical Healthcare, the medical clinic operated by C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc., will be offering sports physicals for school-age children in Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson counties for a flat rate of $30.

A walk-in clinic will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the clinic at 3136 West St.
