Top Brooke High students announced

WELLSBURG - Top students in Brooke High School's Class of 2011 have been announced.

This year's valedictorian is Jacob Robey, and the salutatorian is Derek Wayne. Seniors who earned a 4.0 grade-point average or better are David Alward, Sarah Conaway, Clarissa Kowalczyk, Karson Boyce, Ryan Trimmer, Lauren Stevens, Megan DiDomenico, Ashley Wilcox, Kara Mezan, Leanne Kocher Mazzella, Nina Rodriguez and Kaitlin Wilson.

Robey is the son of Eric and Lori Robey of Colliers. His academic honors and awards include state and national finalist for Elks Most Valuable Student Award, Wellsburg Elks Teen of the Month and Year, National Merit Finalist, Bruin's Best, Eagle Scout, Advanced Placement Rising Scholar with Honor, West Virginia University Bucklew Scholar, Outstanding AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Earth Science Student, Outstanding Senior English Student, Outstanding Senior Honors Project, United States Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, Baush & Lomb Honorary Science Award, Governor's Honor Academy, Boys State, bronze, silver and gold academic pins, perfect attendance all four years, National Honor Society, principal's honor roll and Math Field Day winner.

Robey was named Academic All-American in swimming, co-captain of the Region I and two-time OVAC championship-winning swim teams, swimming state qualifier for four years, state finalist for two years, recipient of the team's Spirit Award three years and two-year varsity cross country letterman.

He was a winner of the Stonewall Jackson Triathlon, member of the engineering, math, chemistry, history, German, Spanish and Key clubs, student council and Boy Scouts, captain of the Academic Team captain, and participated in the school musical all four years.

Robey is a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese's youth leadership board.

He plans to study mechanical/aerospace engineering and physics at West Virginia University.

Wayne is the son of Dennis and Martha Wayne of Follansbee. His honors included National Honor Society, gold academic pin, outstanding advanced placement chemistry student, state Math Field Day winner and the Roger Simpson Award.

He was freshman class treasurer, a member of Key Club, Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership participant and volunteer for Brooke County Math Field Day. He received many awards and honors and set many records as member and captain of Brooke's Region I-winning swim team.

Wayne was named to the OVAC All-Academic Team for soccer, received All-OVAC andAll-State honorable mention, was named to the OVAC first and second teams, received the Brooke Soccer Scholarship and was Wendy's Heisman Brooke High winner.

He has been selected to the West Virginia University Honors College and received the WVU Presidential and Engineering College scholarships and American Electric Power and OVAC Stephen Hannig Memorial Scholarship.

Alward is the son of Harry and Tonette Alward of Wellsburg. Academic achievements included Top of the Mountain for Academic Excellence, Outstanding Performance in human anatomy and biology II, the C.F. Walker Memorial Scholarship, West Virginia University Mountaineer Scholarship and P.R.O.M.I.S.E Scholarship.

He was a four-year baseball letterman, team captain and OVAC All-Star team member and received a Brooke baseball scholarship.

He plans to major in biomedical sciences at WVU.

Boyce is the daughter of Denise and Terry Boyce of Wellsburg. She received the outstanding achievement award in Earth science, bronze, silver and gold academic achievement awards and outstanding achievement award in keyboarding and information technology; a P.R.O.M.I.S.E. Scholarship and was named to the principal's honor roll all four years and Bruins Best.

She was a winner of the West Virginia Young Writers Contest, West Virginia Recycles Contest and Great Public Schools Poster Contest.

She was president of the art club and Paws and Claws.

Conaway is the daughter of Michael and Lisa Conaway of Wellsburg. Her honors and awards include gold, silver and bronze academic pins, Rhododendron Girls State, National Honor Society, principal's honor roll and outstanding achievement awards in banking and financing, entrepreneurship, business computers I, accounting principals I and II, office management, keyboarding and information processing, introduction to business and marketing and business law.

She achieved the gold level in human resource management, office administrative support, personal financial management and accounting and was an Elks Teen of the Month.

Conaway was treasurer for Basketball Babes, statistician for soccer, baseball and basketball teams at the school, a member of Bruins for the Cross, the history, math, chemistry, French, ski and ushers clubs; Future Business Leaders of America, Health Occupation Students of America and Interact and volunteered for Brooke Hills Free Methodist Church's Bible school, Brooke Hills Park day camp, Math Field Day and the Salvation Army.

DiDomenico is the daughter of Pam and Mike DiDomenico of Follansbee. She was vice president of Future Business Leaders of America, president of Interact and a member of DECA and Paws and Claws.

She was named to the principal's honor roll all four years, awarded a P.R.O.M.I.S.E. scholarship, bronze, silver and gold academic awards and named outstanding student in accounting principles I and II, management and entrepreneurship and marketing II.

Kowalczyk is the daughter of Randy and Linda Kowalczyk of Wellsburg. She was involved in FBLA, Interact, DECA, math club where she was secretary, academic team, student council and the Key and chemistry clubs.

She was All OVAC and first team all-state in softball her junior year and on the W.Va. All-Star Team her senior year. She also played volleyball. She has made the principal's honor roll every year and obtained the bronze, silver and gold academic pins.

Kowalczyk was a member of the National Honor Society, an OVAC All-Conference Academic Award winner, in the honors program, Wheeling Youth Leadership and Top of the Mountain. She attends St. Anthony's Church in Follansbee.

Mazzella is the daughter of Vince and Mary Ann Mazzella of Wellsburg. A student in the honors program, her honors included principal's honor roll and National Honors Society, bronze, silver, and gold academic pins, outstanding basic keyboarding student, outstanding management and entrepreneurship student and outstanding college human anatomy I student.

She was on the varsity softball team three years and named to the All-OVAC second team for two years and OVAC All-Star Team and received All-State honorable mention.

She was a statistician for the cross country team and member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Health Occupation Students of America, RAZE, math club, Future Business Leaders of American and Interact.

Mezan is the daughter of Richard and Twila Mezan of Weirton. She is an OVAC Academic Honoree and two-year member of the National Honor Society. She received academic achievement pins and was named to the principal's honor roll all four years.

A four-year letterman in soccer, she was named to the All-State second team, All-Valley second team and West Virginia Sportswriters Association second team, all in 2009; All-OVAC Division I varsity first team and All-Valley second team in 2010; and received All-OVAC Division III honorable mention and All-State honorable mention. She was a member of the Key and chemistry clubs, Health Occupation Students of America and St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

She plans to major in chemical engineering at WVU.

Rodriguez is the daughter of Stacey and Artie Rodriguez of Weirton. A student in the honors program, she has been named to the Principal's Honor Roll all four years and the National Honor Society and received the bronze, silver and gold academic achievement pins and All-Academic Team OVAC Award.

She was a member of the 2007 and 2008 state championship-winning cheerleading squads and 2010 state runner-up squad; vice president of Brooke's student council and a member of its math, art, chemistry and Spanish clubs.

She plans to attend West Virginia Northern Community College and West Virginia University and pursue a career in nursing.

Stevens is the daughter of Bonnie and Chris Adams of Wellsburg. A student in the honors program, she was named to the National Honor Society and French Honor Society and Bruins Best, received the bronze, silver and gold academic achievement awards, was a Math Field Day county winner all four years and participated in the state FFA competition.

She was president of Bruins for the Cross and the French Club, treasurer and vice president of Key Club, Bruin Leadership Team senior adviser and a member of RAZE, Future Educators Association, math, art and history clubs, Interact, Friends of Rachel and the Lighthouse Church in Follansbee. She has been named a Bonner Scholar and Scholar of Distinction at Concord University.

Trimmer is the son of Scott and Zena Trimmer of Follansbee. His honors included National Honor Society, bronze, silver, and gold academic awards, Top of the Mountain Academic Scholar, outstanding male senior math student, outstanding senior social studies student and all-conference academic award.

He was a three-year varsity baseball letterman and member of Future Business Leaders of America, Interact, math, chemistry, environmental and history clubs; and volunteers as sound technician for his church.

Wilcox is the daughter of Brian Wilcox of Colliers and Annette Wilcox of Follansbee. A student of the honors program, she was a member of the National Honor Society, principal's honor roll, Bruins Best and received the bronze, silver and gold academic awards.

She was captain of the OVAC championship-winning varsity soccer team and member of the OVAC-winning junior varsity team and named OVAC Player of the Year and to OVAC first team, All-Valley first team, OVAC and All-State honorable mention and West Virginia Sportswriters Association second team.

She received OVAC honorable mention her junior year for basketball.

She was a member of student council, the chemistry and history clubs and Weirton Heights Church of Christ where she helps with Vacation Bible School. She plans to major in pharmacy at WVU.

Wilson is the daughter of Jim and Lori Trikones of Wellsburg and Jim and Keli Wilson of Follansbee. Her honors included National Honor Society, bronze, silver and gold academic pin, principal's honor roll all four years, excellent performance in anatomy award, outstanding female senior in math for four years, Top Bruin Leader, Elks Teen of the Month, Bruin's Best, American Choral Directors Association chamber choir first runner-up, All-State Choir first runner-up, Rhododendron Girls State,and OVAC All-Star Marching Band.

An honors student, she was a member of the Bruin Leadership Team, Bruins for the Cross, concert, madrigal and Renaissance choirs, the school's news team, Order of the Phoenix, Paws and Claws, school musicals, flag corps and marching band, chemistry, drama, history, Key, math and Spanish clubs; and participated in Brooke Hills Playhouse.

She has been selected for the West Virginia University marching band and color guard.
