WELLSBURG - Volunteers and other supporters of A Child's Place Court-Appointed Special Advocate were recognized at an open house that served as both a fundraiser and an introduction for those new to the organization.
The non-profit group trains volunteers to serve as advocates for children involved in abuse and neglect cases in Brooke and Hancock counties and expedite their placement into permanent, safe homes.
At its 11th annual holiday open house in December, the program received a boost from the Comcast Foundation, whose representatives presented a $9,000 grant.
Rhonda Stubbs, A Child's Place CASA's executive director; and Jennifer Reitter, its coordinator of volunteers; presented the Stick Your Neck Out for CASA Award to Carol Lynn of Wellsburg, a member of its board of directors who raised more than $2,200 over a three-month period for matching funds required of a federal grant awarded to the program.
The grant is issued through the West Virginia Division of Justice and Community Service.
Lynn also assisted in sorting thousands of dolls that were donated for fundraisers held to benefit A Child's Place CASA.
On hand to celebrate A Child's Place CASA's 2010 efforts were Genny Ferri of Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia and Michele Bush of West Virginia CASA Inc.
The open house itself raised about $671 through the participation of local vendors of Longaberger Baskets, Watkins Food Products, Pampered Chef, Silpada Jewelry, BeautiControl, Three Sisters Cheese Straws and Tealightful Treasures.
As the program's newest volunteer advocates, Robert Campbell and Dale Moore were recently administered oaths of office by 1st Judicial Circuit Court Judge Martin Gaughan.
