MINGO JUNCTION - Indian Creek School Board members got an update on activities and events at Wayne Elementary School during the Feb. 17 meeting at Hills Elementary School.

Cil Fritz, principal of Wayne Elementary, gave an update on what's happening at the elementary school. She commended the (school's) staff for its use of new technology and gave credit to the math teachers for their use of the math teacher mentoring program.

Fritz also told board members about the school's upcoming participation in Eastern Gateway Community College's program to educate elementary pupils about the importance of college and higher education.

"(The program) is very basic in its approach," said Mark Furda, superintendent, adding Laura Meeks, EGCC president, will be involved. "(Meeks) will be visiting the kindergarten class, while the upper classes will be participating in March Madness, which is part of the college's (program)."

Fritz also commended pupils, staff and emergency responders for an orderly evacuation due to a furnace problem in February. Furda also commended Fritz, adding her "calm, cool and collected thinking" was responsible for the orderly evacuation.

A backfire in a boiler at the school earlier this month had caused the evacuation of the school and the closing of the school for a few days.
