Extension board to meet

WELLSBURG - The West Virginia University Extension Service Committee for Brooke County will meet at noon Monday at the WVU Extension Office at 840 Charles Street.

Democratic Women seek members

FOLLANSBEE - The Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women will host a Bring a Friend Membership Drive Night on March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Follansbee Branch Library.

Special guests will include West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women President Belinda Biafore and National FDW Second Vice President Carye Blaney.

Refreshments will be served. Yearly dues are $10.

Mentors needed for program

FOLLANSBEE - AmeriCorps is seeking individuals to serve as community mentors for the Energy Express summer reading program.

Mentors will assist children with reading, writing, drama and non-competitive recreational activities during the eight-week program, which will be held June 9-July 29.

Applicants must be at least 18 by June 9. College-bound graduating high school seniors and college students are sought for the mentor positions.

Mentors will receive $1,850 and a $1,132 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award that may be used for up to seven years to pay for college tuition or loans or, for community coordinators 55 or older, may be used by a child, grandchild or foster child within 10 years.

Pool passes offered at discount

WELLSBURG - Passes for the Brooke Hills Park swimming pool will be available at a discount through March 31.

Family passes may be purchased for $40, a $10 discount from their usual price; and individual passes may be purchased for $15, a $5 discount from their usual price.

The pool will be open from noon to 7 p.m. each Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Admission is $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for children.

Library board to meet

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library Board will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the library's Elmer Vincent Meeting Room.

Brooke grad named to dean's list

PITTSBURGH - Megan Gialluco, a senior in the A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration and daughter of Donna Gialluco and Gregg Gialluco of Weirton, has been named to the fall 2010 dean's list at Duquesne University.

Students named to the dean's list have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with no grade lower than a 'C.'

Council to hold Family Fun Night

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Reading Council will be holding Family Fun Night at the Brooke County Public Library on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

All age groups are invited to attend. Activities will include stories, crafts, games and snacks conducted by Dr. Maryann Ehle and members of the Brooke County Reading Council.

Library to show animated film

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-rated animated film "Megamind," Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.

After super-villain Megamind kills his good-guy nemesis, Metro Man, he becomes bored since there is no one left to fight. He creates a new foe, Titan, who, instead of using his powers for good, sets out to destroy the world, positioning Megamind to save the day for the first time in his life.

Library to show action film

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-13-rated film "Red," starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Frank is a former black-ops CIA agent living a quiet life alone, until the day a hit squad shows up to kill him. With his identity compromised, Frank reassembles his old team and sets out to prove that they still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Women's health screenings offered

WELLSBURG - Through the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, the Brooke County Health Department will be offering health screenings for women on March 1.

Free pap tests, pelvic exams, clinical breast exams and blood pressure screenings will be available to women, ages 25-64, who are uninsured, underinsured, meet specific income guidelines and haven't had a pap test in two years.

Income-eligible women, ages 50-64, will receive a mammorgram referral.

Local singer to be discussed

WELLSBURG - Mary-Bess Halford, a native of England and Bethany College librarian for 17 years, will discuss the life of Eleanor Steber, a Wheeling native who performed with the Metropolitan Opera, at a program held at noon March 3 by the Friends of the Brooke County Public Library.

Steber, who received international acclaim as a soprano, also taught at the Julliard School. Halford plans to bring photos and recordings of Steber to the free program.

Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch.

Led by Ruth Lewis, the Friends of the Brooke County Library also are preparing for their annual meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. April 28. The group plans to present a special family program at that time, with details to be announced.

Seniors enjoy karaoke

WELLSBURG - Residents at Unity Apartments gathered for snacks and singing to karaoke gospel music provided by John and Joyce Hudson.

Plans have been made for the pair to provide karaoke every other Tuesday beginning Feb. 15.
