BERGHOLZ - DeNoon Lumber Co. at 571 county Road 52 has grown into one of Ohio's premier hardwood sawmills.
DeNoon Lumber began operation when Bill DeNoon started the company in 1963 in Bergholz. Bill grew up on a local farm and started into the business as a logger and then a small sawmill operator.
The mill grew over the years by acquiring hardwoods from the region and producing high-quality sawn products. In 1989, the company started a dry-kiln operation and today Clayco Dry Kiln has 400 MBF dry-kiln capacities with a 500 MBF pre-drier. Looking to capture new opportunities and take advantage of new technologies, DeNoon's current operation uses a band saw with two head rigs and one band re-saw that produces 5,000 board feet per hour.
DeNoon Lumber Co. in Bergholz takes pride in turning raw hardwoods into finished products since being founded in 1963.
In 1990, DeNoon began selling molding and millwork and now sells finished products in wholesale and retail markets. These combined operations make DeNoon Lumber unique in the business in that the sawmill takes the tree from the woods to the mill to a dried and finished product with no middlemen involved. DeNoon Lumber is able to pass on high-quality natural wood products at incredible savings to their customers. DeNoon's slogan says it all - "Better grade, better selection, better price."
The mill operates multiple shifts and currently is operating 20 hours per day, four days per week with approximately 100 employees. Bill DeNoon understands the importance of having good employees and treating them well. The fact that DeNoon has had a number of employees on the payroll for more than 30 years, with one more than 38 years, is an indicator of its success in this area.
DeNoon Lumber produces a large variety of crown molding and base and window trim in a variety of natural hardwoods including red oak, cherry, poplar and maple. DeNoon also is the region's leader in natural hardwood flooring featuring walnut, maple, cherry, rustic cherry and red oak to name a few, all available either pre-finished or unfinished.
When asked if they had a key message that has allowed them to remain successful and keep the business going, DeNoon said, "You have to keep up with modern technology to change how you do things."
He pointed out the mill has had computerized systems for some time, but DeNoon Lumber especially was proud to announce its new e-commerce site, which allows consumers to purchase products online from the Web site at www.denoon.com. Those who want to see and experience the natural beauty of their hardwood products firsthand can visit the showroom in Bergholz from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday.
It's encouraging to see that even as difficult as the times have been for the forest industry, the DeNoon Lumber Co. continues strong, providing jobs and economic benefits, protecting the resource and believing that by working the right way, they will continue to do so for years to come.
