Ranen Casto ‘soldier-hero’February 2, 2009 - From staff reportsSAN ANTONIO - Army Spec. Ranen E. Casto, son of William A. Casto of New Alexandria Road, Brilliant, was one of 85 soldier-heroes to participate in the Army-sponsored Jan. 3 nationally televised All-American Bowl high school all-star football contest held in the Alamodome. Casto and his fellow soldier-heroes were chosen to represent the Army based upon receiving either the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star or Purple Heart for action in either Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Casto and his fellow soldiers were greeted with a standing ovation by the more than 30,000 fans prior to the game. Casto is a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Badge. "During my tour in Afghanistan, I was shot in the thigh by an enemy's AK-47 rifle bullet," said Casto. Casto is now charged with the task of building Army facilities and teaching Afghanis to be carpenters. During activities in the days leading up to game day, Casto was involved with the players, as well as other soldier heroes in events such as a skills competition, a river cruise, a barbeque and a banquet held in their honor. "This was a good event for us to connect with civilians and tell our stories to the players. I enjoyed touring San Antonio. It was also a very educational experience and I really enjoyed the events I was a part of and my interaction with the high school players," said Casto. With combat experience and a strong background in mentoring other soldiers, Casto and his fellow soldier-heroes were given an opportunity to pass along to players many of the values they've forged during their Army careers, according to Army officials. "I'd like to pass on all the Army values. Like duty for example - it's our duty to protect our country. Also, respect, selfless service, honor, loyalty, integrity and personal courage can be passed on through our stories and actions," said Casto. Casto, who has been in the Army two years, said he believes that serving his country is an important way to give back everything the nation has provided for him and his family. "Serving in the military creates a good setup for your life. And it allows for interesting stories you can tell everyone," said Casto. |
