Edison appoints Quattrochi
By JULIE GHRIST, staff writerSTEUBENVILLE - While the votes weren't unanimous, Edison Local's Assistant Superintendent David Quattrochi was named the district's interim superintendent Thursday.
Following deliberations in an executive session prior to and following the monthly board meeting at Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Quattrochi was appointed to the position in a 3-2 vote.
Quattrochi will take over the superintendent duties on Dec. 1 from Superintendent Lisa Carmichael, who recently accepted the superintendent's position with Massillon City School District.
Board president Larry Crow, vice president Rich Gregor and member Tracy Wright voted to put Quattrochi in the interim position. Voting against the motion were members Karen Taylor and Thomas Cattrell.
The motion also included naming Pleasant Hill Principal Dana Snider as interim assistant superintendent.
Quattrochi and Snider will serve in their capacities from Dec. 1 through May 31 at their current daily contract rate, according to current Superintendent Lisa Carmichael.
Carmichael's resignation letter was accepted by the board on Thursday. She was named superintendent in the Edison Local School District in 2004.
Also during Thursday's meeting, Carmichael asked the board to approve a resolution that would allow her to submit a letter to the Ohio Department of Education requesting the district be released from "fiscal watch" status.
The district was placed in fiscal caution on Nov. 29, 2006, and was elevated to a fiscal watch on Feb. 8, 2007.
Because of the financial crisis, Carmichael and the board made several cuts that included reductions in force, ending some school programs and closing Irondale and Richmond elementary schools.
"I will be sending a letter to the auditor of state and the Ohio Department of Education requesting they release us from the fiscal watch status based on our most recent five-year forecast," the departing superintendent told the board.
"I will submit that letter on Friday and am very proud to say that we have a positive year-end balance. The forecast is looking better than it has in many, many years."
In other business, the board:
Heard a presentation from Dave Thompson, athletic director at Springfield Middle School. Thompson said he wanted to recognize Springfield Principal Ed Chanoski for his "diligent work in providing insurmountable support."
Thompson presented Chanoski with a plaque for helping him to secure a "very generous contribution" from Apex Environmental for $21,514.
The money will be used for purchasing wrestling mats and equipment and to sponsor an upcoming wrestling tournament to be hosted at the school.
Chanoski expressed his appreciation to Thompson, saying he is blessed with a wonderful staff and the appreciation should go to Apex.
"It's unbelievable what they have done for us," Chanoski said. "I really believe their hearts are for the kids of this district."
Approved Alicia Hartman as track coach at Stanton Elementary School under a supplemental contract agreement.
Approved the following classified supplemental contracts for Stanton - Steve Kline, eighth-grade boys basketball coach; Nicole Mackey, winter cheerleading coach; and Steve Eft, eighth-grade basketball coach: and at Springfield - Rick Springer and Brian Straka, boys basketball volunteers; James Jones, seventh-grade boys basketball; and Amy Scott, seventh-grade girls basketball coach.
Taylor noted that she believes individuals hired in these particular capacities "should have played that sport before" if they are to coach the district's children.
While she did not specify as to whom she was referring, she said "we can never find enough qualified people to fill these positions."
Approved Tracy McCain and Lorri Cade as substitute bus drivers.
Approved by a 3-2 vote to hire Brenda Staffilino as a transportation consultant on an as-needed basis at $20 per hour, not to exceed $20,000 annually.
Approved hiring Joe DeBold as director of transportation for the district under a one-year contract, effective Dec. 2.
Quattrochi announced an "extremely detailed report on bus routes" is being dispersed to bus drivers and substitutes that will entail mileage breakdowns as well.
Recognized Edison High School teacher Ellen Swickard for being named one of the two recipients to receive the 2008 Wayne F. White outstanding teacher of the year award.

Wow, never thought a responsible school would appoint one of the biggest drug addict alcoholics I know. Good doing, Edison!
