Man charged in rape of young child

STEUBENVILLE — Rodney Hudson, 32, of North Royalton was charged Tuesday by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department with one count of rape involving a young child.

The sheriff’s department reported Hudson had sexual contact with an 8-year-old boy between January and April.

Wilson praises halt

to strategic oil filling

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Bridgeport, said Tuesday he was pleased President Bush agreed to stop shipping oil into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve through the end of the year as long as crude oil remains above $75 per barrel.

Wilson said the reserve is 97 percent full and shipments will end June 30.

“It should help us by keeping the amount of supply we have higher than it would normally be,” Wilson said.

“If we can drop the price of gasoline 20 or 25 cents a gallon, I think that’s huge. At least we’re heading in the right direction, coming down versus going up.”

Gasoline prices

take 13-cent jump

PITTSBURGH — Gasoline prices stood at an average $3.90 a gallon for self-serve regular across South Central Ohio, a 13.1-cent jump over the previous week, according to the AAA East Central’s weekly Fuel Gauge Report.

AAA said with crude oil pushing toward $130 a barrel, it anticipates prices to continue to rise during the Memorial Day weekend, the first driving holiday period of summer.

Nationally, the average stood at $3.80 a gallon as of Tuesday.

Across the region, the highest average prices were reported in the Ironton area at $3.97 a gallon.

The lowest were reported in the Steubenville area, at $3.78 a gallon.

Red Cross to hold

blood drives

STEUBENVILLE — The American Red Cross Jefferson County Chapter will hold blood drives next week.

A blood drive is planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Fort Steuben Mall and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Christian Church of Wellsburg at 1001 Charles St.

Individuals must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in reasonably good health.
