Unattended cooking listed as fire cause

STEUBENVILLE — Unattended cooking is being blamed for a fire around 2:18 p.m. Sunday that caused extensive damage to a duplex on Wilkins Street, the City Fire Department reported.

The fire department reported heavy smoke upon arrival at 707 Wilkins St. The fire was under control within 20 minutes but there was extensive damage to the kitchen section of the home, the fire department reported. The adjoining section of the duplex at 709 Wilkins St. had significant smoke damage, the fire department reported.

The Jefferson County Chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist the occupants.

No injuries were reported.

Water break on Gumps Lane brings boil order

WINTERSVILLE — A water break on Gumps Lane occurred early today, according to officials, and residents there will be asked to observe a 48-hour boil order once repairs have been made.

Free tire pick up and drop off planned

SMITHFIELD — A free tire pick up and drop off is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 27-29 at state Route 152 and county Road 10 at the bottom of the hill in the village.

The pick up and drop off is for Smithfield Township, Smithfield, Piney Fork, Adena and Dillonvale residents only.

Tires with rims and without rims, batteries, lawnmowers, ranges, washers, dryers, refrigerators and air conditioners will be accepted, as well as household garbage, according to township officials.

The event is sponsored by Keep Jefferson County Beautiful, a division of the Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority.

West Liberty holds transfer registration

WEST LIBERTY — West Liberty State College will hold a series of registration programs for transfer students through the remainder of May and June, July and August.

During the registration process, students will learn about life on campus, meet the college faculty members, take a tour of the campus, choose classes for the fall semester, have photos taken for their Hilltopper student identification cards and view some of the residence halls.

The dates for transfer registration are May 29 for the school of business administration; the school of education is set for Thursday, June 16, July 15 and Aug. 14; the school of liberal arts, Thursday, June 19, July 17 and Aug. 7; and the school of science is scheduled Thursday, June 19, July 17 and Aug. 7.

Transfer students who are undecided may register for and attend any of the sessions for the four schools.
