CAC Cooling program starts June 1

May 19, 2008
From staff reports
STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County Community Action Council will start assisting senior citizens and others with summer energy expenses starting June 1.

“Air conditioners are available to those residents with qualifying documented medical conditions. And qualified households will be eligible to receive a one-time payment for their electric bill up to the percentage of income payment or the current bill, whichever is greater,” explained Eliza Kelley of the CAC.

“Seniors who are 60 years old or older are eligible for a one-time payment on their electric bill. A medical excuse or disconnect notice is not required. Residents under 60 years of age must provide a written statement from their doctor stating a medically certified condition to qualify for assistance with their electric bill. And applications for utility assistance and air conditioner assistance must be made at the same time,” explained Kelley.

Kelley said applicants must provide proof of income for all members of the household 18 years or older for the past 90 days.

“Proof of income includes alimony, pay stubs, copies of Social Security checks or award letters, child support, pension or utility allowance. And if there is no income in the household, you must provide documentation that warrants you having no income. Applicants must also provide Social Security cards of all household members including children two years of age and older,” said Kelley.

“Applicants must also provide documentation of utility bills,” Kelley added.

Household income must be at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

Kelley said applications will be taken between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday on a first-come-first-served basis.

Information about the program is available by calling the CAC office at (740) 282-0971, extension 192.
