POSTED: May 13, 2008

A beach theme was the setting for the installation banquet of the GFWC/OFWC Woman’s Club of Mingo held at the Smithfield Presbyterian Church social room.

Along with the fun theme, serious moments were observed with the installation of officers by Peggy Meola, East Ohio River director of juniors, and a memorial service for deceased members.

It was Meola’s first installation in her term as junior director. She used the theme of mirrors, the service conducted when she was installed.

Joanne Waugh, who is recovering from knee surgery, did not attend. Kathy Maguschak stood in for her during the ceremony.

Installed were Kathleen McCuen, first vice president; Elizabeth Crothers, second vice president; Cheri Carpico, recording secretary; Diana Taylor, corresponding secretary; Bernie Carpico, treasurer; Clara Sue Milewsky, press reporter; and Mary Jane Tiberio, director at large.

Rouse, East Ohio River District president, assisted with the installation.

Maguschak read a poem, “God Calling His Own Home,” for three members who died during the year, Mary “Bay” Livingston, Relynah Wamsley and Angela Thornton. Milewsky lit three candles in their memory.

Rouse who attended the Ohio Federation convention, reported on state awards received, including outstanding participation and 12th in the state for pink sheet projects; outstanding for the Faith, Hope and Love Award, promoting warning signals of cancer and helping a club member through the illness; and outstanding in the conservation department, beautification division.

Perfect attendance awards were presented to Bernie Carpico, Cheri Carpico, Crothers; Kathleen Degenkolb, McCuen, Milewsky, Rouse and Tiberio.

Maguschak presided for a short meeting, and reminded members of the new welcome sign dedication to be held Mary 17. It will be dedicated to Darlene Huff, club member for many years.

Taylor was named to head the dunking machine game at the Mingo Community Days, held Aug.8-10. Shelly Bateman will be chairman of the basket drawing.

A decorated hat contest was held with the following winners: Cheri Carpico, funniest; Tiberio, prettiest; Milewsky, best overall; and Esther McCoy, best use of theme.

A Hula Hoop contest was held with Maguschak performing the longest at 61 seconds.

Pat Freeland was banquet chairman. Tiberio and Crothers were on the committee..
