School nurses earn respect

May 2, 2008

To the editor:

May 7 has been designated as National School Nurse Recognition Day. You may wish to recognize and thank your school nurse for his or her special contributions to the education of the children and adolescents in our community.

The school nurse functions to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and staff in their school systems. School nurses also are an invaluable resource for planning, administering and directing health care for children with special needs, so that they may safely attend school.

A primary objective for school nurses is to intervene to keep children healthy and consistently in school.

In addition, the school nurse can contribute a unique perspective as your school develops and refines its emergency response plan.

So please join me in recognizing school nurses for the wonderful purpose they serve on Wednesday.
