Making liberals feel good

January 12, 2014

To the editor: Happy 2014, America —three years to go. Hope we make it. On New Year’s Day, I picked up my wife’s prescription, and it cost almost three times what it did before....

Great letter, Rob.

Unintended consequences. Liberals fail to look further than their own immediate needs, no further than the end of their nose. Feelings, as Rob pointed out.

Why is it that what liberals want must become law, and what conservatives want must become illegal?

This may not make liberals feel good.

Rumours of marriage problems threaten to overshadow Michelle Obama's 50th birthday

A LEADING American divorce mediator will visit Washington this week to offer members of Congress advice on ending the "tiresome bickering" between Republicans and Democrats. If US tabloids are to be believed, she may need to visit the White House first.

Michelle Obama's extended absence from Washington and a flurry of renewed speculation about the state of the first couple's marriage are threatening to overshadow her 50th birthday party at the White House on Saturday.

God Bless George H.Bush And Barbara, and George W. Bush and Laura!

I, like many people – and probably most people, if they are honest with themselves, have a combination of conservative and liberal views. And the issue really depends on your point of view.

For instance, my feelings are very conservative regarding the unborn; I am extremely inflexible in my views about our duty to rigorously conserve our environment; And, I was very old-fashioned in establishing my daughters’ curfew. I have very liberal feelings about gay rights, marriages/unions, marijuana legalization and my son’s curfew (if I had a do-over, I would change that one, would have saved some heartache.)

Letters like yours which vilify a group of people is nonsensical, since you likely don’t know, have not truly scrutinized and probably don’t care WHAT “liberals” want. This was purely meant to incite controversy and it’s childish, tiresome and unproductive.

I hate to say I told you so, but....

Bailing Out Health Insurers and Helping Obamacare

Robert Laszewski—a prominent consultant to health insurance companies—recently wrote in a remarkably candid blog post that, while Obamacare is almost certain to cause insurance costs to skyrocket even higher than it already has, “insurers won’t be losing a lot of sleep over it.” How can this be? Because insurance companies won’t bear the cost of their own losses—at least not more than about a quarter of them. The other three-quarters will be borne by American taxpayers.

For some reason, President Obama hasn’t talked about this particular feature of his signature legislation. Indeed, it’s bad enough that Obamacare is projected by the Congressional Budget Office to funnel $1,071,000,000,000.00 (that’s $1.071 trillion) over the next decade (2014 to 2023) from American taxpayers, ...

Incandescent bulb ban leaves bird hospital cold...

Ottawa's Wild Bird Care Centre wasn't ready for federal government change on Jan. 1

Ottawa’s Wild Bird Care Centre has put the call out for incandescent light bulbs, which it uses to provide warmth for injured and recovering birds, after the federal government banned manufacturers from making the bulbs.

In Canada, the more energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs are considered the norm. The incandescent light bulbs use more power, but they are also warmer and serve an important role inside incubators.

“As the light bulb is on, it will obviously warm things up and then the setting will turn it off to keep the right temperature,” explained Mireille Goguen, who works at the centre.
