Animals should be better protected

June 30, 2013

To the editor: I cannot figure out why a person can go to jail if his or her dog kills a person, but will only get a small fine if the dog kills someone’s pet....

You are insane to compare a animal to a human being. You must not have children or grandcchildren. No one cares what happens to animals when they hurt or maim any child. They are children of God and with that said I rest my case.

"Why do human lives count for so much more than nonhuman?"

Have you ever had children?? I have pets and a child and there is NO comparison. I love my pets, but if I had to chose between losing my pets or losing my child there is NO comparison. I would lose 1000+ pets before losing my single child.

I've had to deal with several very mean pitbulls in the last few years. From my experience, the people that own such dogs typically do so because they are ineligible to own firearms. They are a status symbol to the wannabe hardass. Worse yet is the fact that people who own such dogs often don't have the money to compensate people for what their animals destroy. So, if you get bit, you have to pay the vet to patch up your dog or cat, you just lost loads of money. The best solution is to alert the authorities, if it is an imminent threat, shoot it, then press charges against the owner.

Human lives are "worth" so much more because they are human. No matter what, other than in the mind of the owner that will always be the case. Having said that, the owner of a viscous dog should be able to be charged with murder, or attempted murder if their dog attacks and kills or severely injures a person. As for your animals, you can file a lawsuit against the owners of the pitbulls for damages. Matter of fact, I'd pursue it so bad that the owners would pack up and leave. Next thing I'd do (assuming that you have already reported this to the authorities) is shoot the pitbulls on sight if on my property. Their right to own such a dog ends when it enters my personal space, especially knowing their history.
