Questions about Edison levy

February 3, 2013

To the editor: Why are all the papers children in the Edison Local School District bring home and even mailings we receive so full of negatively? As a voter, I am turned off by mud-slinging......

The Board of Education in the past two levy attempts have provided the district with positivethings about the district, however the levy did not pass. Now they are at the point where they need to advise the district what will happen if the levy does not pass this time. Good things-The district has been rated as a district of excellence with distinction from the State of Ohio for its academics, the high school offers dual credit classes that provide them with college credit from EGCC, excellent teachers, staff to name a few. The BOE has kept the district in the black, while budgets continued to be cut. This has all been done with staffing currently below the state minimum staffing modules. The levy is needed in order to continue operating the school district for its everyday expenses. The money is not for the sports programs or a new building. No one wants to be negative, but the facts are the facts. The district, in my opinion, offers the best academics around. Support the levy

Instead of positive and negative, how about just going with the facts. This levy will take property owners already stretched financially and make them pay more. Teachers that own property in the district, will threaten to strike during the next contract negotiation if they don't get a pay raise. The district will continue to lose students. Finally, the district will continue to demonstrate financial irresponsibility.

GTFC, you mention the "dual credit" classes. I imagine that only applies if you get into the class. Not everyone will get into the class. I'm an EHS grad, I've been on the losing end of that call, you cannot pull the wool over my eyes. If you were one of the "elite" you got to stay even though you might not be the most qualified for the class.

RPG-Do you have a personal grudge against the district? Sounds like you do. Everyone with common sense knows the property taxes will go up if the levy passes. The district is not denying that. I now know why I dont comment that often on here. You cant have a debate about facts when most people on here want to bash the distict. Dual credit is a great program and students and parents have been very happy with it. DISTRICT OF EXCELLENCE WITH DISTINCTION from the state.

GTFC, No, I do not have a personal grudge. I'm simply telling it how it was when I was there. One teacher wanted less students in his advanced class, so he had a some students transfer from the class based on what other classes those students were taking instead of their acedemic performance. Those that fought to stay (good, smart, students) had a difficult time passing the class just like the instructor had promised them if they stayed against his wishes. Unwilling to argue I transferred to the lower level class and the teacher asked me why I was there and not in the advanced class because I breezed through the easy class.

As for the dual credit classes, I agree it is a good program as long as everyone has a chance to take them.

When it comes to taxes, I believe it is time to ask the question; is it really necessary to increase the taxes of already financially strapped property owners? Higher taxes hurt the local economy.

GTFC, The good news is RPG now lives in the Toronto District where he is enjoying paying higher taxes there for new facilities! RPG sure there are people that will struggle with the tax increase, but the majority will not, I have lived here a fairly long time and edison has never passed a rally. Good luck tomorrow at the polls, the kids deserve the best just like Toronto's kids couldn't wait.

Ohioan, I'm not hurting because of higher taxes. I'm just angry that only about 50% of the people that have school age children pay property taxes for the levy. You say that it will not affect people. I beg to differ. What if a person worked in the mill for most of their life and they own a farm. What if that farm is valued at $250,000? What if they retired from, or was laid off from the mill? Now their taxes will increase significantly. It will hurt people. There are a lot of property owners in the Edison district, and I also believe that about half the homes are valued around $100,000 give or take a few thousand. Even if it passes, they will be right back asking for more within a few semesters.

Not to worry RPG the underhanded tactics used to extort money from the property owners failed. Now after the fourth time I hope they get the message. You are wrong on one thing RPG. The teachers will go on strike anyway it wouldn't matter to them that people or the district are hurting. They will ask for more anyway. What hurts they will get what ever they want and the true people that make the district will be cut. Bus drivers, cooks, aids, clerk and all the other support people in the district. The backbone of the district.
