Mock debate mirrors the issues
By MARK J. MILLER Staff writer TORONTO — Pupils in the seventh and eighth grades at the city high school recently witnessed a mock debate between the two major parties’ presidential candidates. Although Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain were busy campaigning elsewhere Friday, their stand-in “surrogates,” including John Rodesh as Obama and Brad Melville as McCain, were busy debating the issues before a packed house of pupils at the high school. Linda Blair, seventh- and eighth-grade social studies teacher, said it was Rodesh’s idea to have the debate, and the two candidates did the debate research on their own. “Actually, they did the majority of the work on their own preparing for the debate,” said Blair, adding pupils had to study the positions of the candidates on a variety of issues. “They have put a lot of time and effort into it.” Besides Rodesh and Melville, pupil Devin Coil played Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden, wh
