Safety becomes top priority

TORONTO — The city school district has made safety a top priority through the formation of a district safety committee. From additional staff and teacher training to new procedures for fire drills, the committee is trying to make the district a safer place for pupils and students, according to Maureen Taggart, district communications coordinator and Karaffa Middle School principal. “We have an active safety committee in the district,” said Taggart, adding the committee consists of herself, Mark Blasko, district nurse Katie Long and district Superintendent Fred Burns. “We’ve been trying to identify safety concerns in the school district,” continued Taggart, adding the committee has been meeting twice monthly to find ways to address safety concerns. “We’ve also been meeting with the staff to identify their safety concerns that need repaired or addressed.” Taggart said building improvements so far have included replacing all the light ballasts at S.C.
