W.Va. ends budget year with record tax collections
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia is starting off the new budget year in good shape after finishing the previous fiscal year with a record $3.928 billion in tax collections.
Deputy Revenue Secretary Mark Muchow (MEW’-koh) says the total rose 4.7 percent from the 2006-2007 year.
Much of the increase is attributed to severance tax collections, which were up 12.6 percent to $338.2 million — primarily because of coal and natural gas sales.
Overall, state tax collections were $109.2 million over projections.
Most of the upswing, though, came in the first nine months. And consumer sales tax collections were $47.5 million below estimates.
