Former steelworker grows new business
RICHMOND — Woodland Trails is about as far removed from the roar and grit of a steel mill as one can get in Jefferson County. It’s the love of the outdoors and plants that spurs former Weirton Steel employee Sam Gill in his business, a greenhouse and plant nursery off Salem Township Road 216, 1.3 miles from state Route 43 just north of Richmond. “Just turn by the township garage and go 1.3 miles,” Gill said. A visitor who turns at the Woodland Trails sign off the township road will drive up a hill and emerge from the woods into a plant wonderland, with everything from small trees and evergreens to perennials of many varieties and tomato plants and hanging baskets and decorative landscaping grasses. The list goes on and on. Gill worked at Weirton Steel for 32 years before taking a buyout in 2006.
