Afraid of a cross
July 28, 2012 - Mike Mathison
This whole ordeal with the cross representing Franciscan University of Steubenville inside the City of Steubenville logo has me mad, dumbfounded and, in general, asking a simple question to all the people who are riding this "separation of church and state" thing -- why are you afraid of a cross?
It's a cross that represents FUS, the largest employer in Steubenville, and probably will be for a very, very, very long time.
The cross represents FUS, a Catholic-based university that has students from all over the country, including the same states where people have so decided to send us letters to the editor about their apparent outrage that a cross would actually exist in a city logo.
Oh, the shame!
In addition, we really do not know this alleged person who allegedly complained to some Wisconsin firm actually allegedly exists. You see, the alleged person never stood in front of the Steubenville City Council to complain and, when a colleague contacted the Wisconsin firm to ask of the alleged person's identity, they would not divulge the information.
So, is this alleged person for real, or did something just get made up because this Wisconsin firm apparently hates the cross, especially when it involves a city logo?
Again, why are all of you haters so afraid of a cross?
Not one person is jamming their religion down your throats. Not one person is making you like the logo. Not one person is shouting from the nearest mountaintop any of Jesus' sermons. Not one person is pushing any certain agenda.
It's not a conspiracy. It's a cross that represents FUS.
And, really, it's that simple.
