36 down, 36 to go

June 16, 2012 - Mike Mathison
In my Monday column, my NO choices for the U.S. Open were Tiger (-1), Phil (+7), Bubba (+9) and Rory (+10).

My YES picks were: Donald (+11), Dufner (+3), Furyk (-1), Stricker (+4) and Kuchar (+3).

I obviously hit it OB with Tiger and Luke, but that puts me 7 for 9.

Phil is not coming back and Furyk, Dufner, Kuchar (my winner) and Stricker are still in the hunt.

Yes, this looks like Tiger's to win or lose, but put nothing past Furyk or David Toms, also a major champion.

There is also Graeme McDowell, Hunter Mahan and Charl Schwartzel.

Players have to get through holes 1-6 without bludgeoning themselves and they have a shot. The front 9 has 8 of the 9 hardest holes on the course. The only hard hole, so far, on the back is 16.

Admittedly, Tiger is playing good golf. But, his putting is mediocre, at best. He wins or loses this thing based on his putter.

Yes, you can say that about everybody.

Furyk has hit 13 of 28 fairways and 27 of 36 greens with 61 putts. He is 2 for 2 in sand saves and has made 29 pars. Furyk has hit the most GIR through 36 holes. Kuchar is second.

Tiger has hit 21 of 28 fairways, but 25 of 36 greens with 60 putts. He is 1 for 5 for sand saves and has made 25 pars. Tiger has hit the most fairways through 36 holes.

Toms has hit 15 of 28 fairways and 21 of 36 greens with 56 putts. He is 6 for 8 in sand saves and has made 27 pars.

It is going to be a fun weekend.
