| | "Under God"June 19, 2011 - Mike MathisonNBC should be ashamed as it twice left out "under God" as children said the Pledge of Allegiance in the lead-in to Sunday's U.S. Open coverage. Because it didn't want to offend anyone, it offended myself and many others. The politically correct world is getting truly disgusting. The USGA and The Golf Channel should also be disgusted for these intentional actions. Someone should be fired and advertising dollars should be pulled. NBC released a statement that, in part said, "... Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it." What did you think would happen? If it was not done to upset anyone, why was it done? NBC claims it wasn't intentional. Really? I heard the children say all the other words except those two. It wasn't an error. Errors happen by accident. A shortstop doesn't boot a grounder on purpose. NBC booted this grounder and did so on purpose.

The problem is you left a number of things out. First of all the original pledge was, “I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all." If we follow your argument then NBC still missed the mark because your argument is that they shouldn’t use “Under God” because it wasn’t in the original poem. There have been a number of changes since it was written. “Under God” was added in 1954 through a bill that passed Congress and was signed by the President. NBC chose to be the US Congress and they chose to be the President. The United States Pledge to the flag (until congress changes it) is, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." MrCoreJun-20-11 1:53 AM It doesn't belong there anyway. It wasn't in the original - which was written by a Baptist minister who didn't think it was needed. It doesn't fit the theme of the pledge. It's an edit by committee which has no place in a secular nation. Think about it. Describing the republic for which the flag stands the writer said we are one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The word indivisible was an appositive descriptor of the fact that we are one nation. Sticking the under God clause in there clumps and complicates the prose in an artificial manner. Any good editor would have cut it years ago. Post a Comment | |
