18 to go
June 18, 2011 - Mike Mathison
Sans one player, this is a really good U.S. Open.
Add that one player, Rory McIlroy, and it is a great U.S. Open.
It is a pleasure watching one guy, the next "guy" in golf, burying the field at Congressional.
He has hit good shot after good shot, giving credence to the old adage, "one shot at a time."
It appears he has not looked further ahead than the next shot at hand and refuses to look in the rear view mirror.
It is just great golf.
Other players are going flag hunting and it shows the USGA has done another good job in setting up a golf course.
Par is still a really good score, it's just the rain the past few days has allowed Congressional's greens to be used as dart boards. It has nothing to do with course set-up.
Twenty players are under par, led by McIlroy's 199 after 54 holes, one of many Open records he has set.
It will be a pleasure to watch him close the deal on Father's Day.
