December 19, 2010 - Mike Mathison
In a quiet form of communication, the NFL has fined Carolina's Tyler Brayton because the defensive end ran off the bench to elbow Atlanta's Chris Owens in the head after the Falcon was blocked out of bounds during a punt return.
This is 100 times worse than the Nick Alosi thing because Brayton left the bench, moved to the side of the field to (as it appears to me) purposely knock Owens on his keyster. Alosi just stood there and moved his knee about 6 inches.
Brayton was fined $15,000 of his $2.2 million salary. Alosi paid a $25,000 fine and was suspended for the remainder of the season.
If both guys did the same thing, and yes, it was on the same day, I would guess more and more of this has been going on for some time in the NFL. And, if the guys did the same thing, is there a reason Brayton is still in uniform?
The NFL sent a memo saying to get back on the sidelines, but are big hypocrites in issuing fines for the same act.
The league treated the Brayton fine like the Watergate break in.
But, the final ruling will be that guys on punt and kickoff returns may not be blocked out of the playing field.
