Decisions to make

November 19, 2010 - Mike Mathison
The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference has some interesting decisions to make with having 50 teams and five classifications next year. Its playoff system needs a minor overhaul. There is no chance for five championship baseball games to be played at Vaccaro Field on a Saturday. I would guess two on Friday and three on Saturday would be the course of action. The same goes for softball at the I-470 complex. I know softball games play faster than baseball games, but a 14-inning pitcher's duel will knock that schedule off-kilter in a heartbeat. That means, two on Friday and three on Saturday may also be the answer. Yes, the same goes for volleyball at Big Red. Yes, the same goes for basketball at OUE. Five games in one day at one facility and you plan on cleaning out the gym each time? If so, it will require a smaller window between games and more rushing out of fans. Right now the games are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Subtracting 30 minutes between tipoffs, that would call for games at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. That's a little late for the last game, but do you want to start the first game before 10 a.m.? Hope there is no double or triple overtime. Track and field is a minor mess. The change was made for four classifications and four athletes from each class made the finals -- 16 people on an 8-lane track. But, now with five classes ... that number does not go into 16. I look forward to the answers because I think they'll all be good. But, more importantly, I look forward to the kids trying to win these championships.
