Should be interesting
May 29, 2008 - Mike Mathison
Mike Haney and Sean Tucker have recently been named the new boys basketball coaches at Steubenville and Catholic Central, respectively.
That means things will be different on the sidelines at Big Red and for the Crusaders.
But, any time there are coaching changes, things are different.
(That is, of course, unless you are the Chicago Bulls who hired a fiery, tough, demanding coach in Doug Collins after firing a fiery, tough, demanding coach in Scott Stiles).
Haney and new assistant coach Anthony Pierro will bring a different attitude and fire to Big Red. Quite simply, the football mentality will be brought to the basketball court.
Although I never witnessed it, one local varsity basketball coach told me coach Pierro's freshmen teams at Steubenville played hard and with a lot of passion.
Central will be introduced to a different type of defense.
Tucker played for coach Joe Dunlevy at Indian Creek, so you can expected the young men in blue and gold will have implanted in their brains how to take a charge and get after it on the defensive end of the court.
And, just an educated guess here, if they so refuse to do that, there is a nice place on the bench for them to watch those who can.
This will bring a new intensity level to the city rivalry games, which are already rather intense.
