Almost Heaven – A $49.95 Staycation @ The Greenbrier
May 6, 2010 - Alex Marshall
Last week’s trip to The Greenbrier will long be remembered not so much for its classic architecture, exquisite interior design, carefully sculpted landscape (I’m talking 3 championship golf courses, of course), impeccable service and its outstanding amenities, but rather the unbelievable double-occupancy room rate of only $49.95.
Long live Big Jim Justice, native West Virginian and new owner of The Greenbrier!
Incidentally, Justice just recently purchased the Glade Springs Resort in Beckley as well. I will be getting a sneak-peek of that venue in August when I attend the West Virginia Press Association Convention.
As every West Virginian knows, The Greenbrier is an awarding-winning resort (seeking to recapture that 4th Star it lost during the waning years of the CSX ownership) located in White Sulphur Springs. That 4th Star is assured based on my $49.95 experience.
According to its website, the renowned property offers 721 rooms, including 33 suites and 96 guest and estate houses. The Greenbrier has 10 lobbies, 40+ meeting rooms and a complete conference center facility. Guests enjoy over 50 recreational activities including 3 championship golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and a 40,000-square-foot spa.
My mother lives ten minutes from The Greenbrier in Lewisburg so I’ve visited the resort on a number of occasions, but never an overnighter -- AND CERTAINLY NEVER FOR $49.95!
Now before you rush to book your $49.95 double-occupancy staycation at The Greenbrier, you should know that that very special rate was extended only to those who signed up to volunteer for the PGA Tour’s newest event, The Greenbrier Classic, which will be played at The Greenbrier the week of July 26 – August 1 on the famed Old White course.
In a rare showing of brotherly love, I will join sibs John and Peter (See accompanying photo) as official tournament Marshals. (Imagine that; the Marshalls marshaling at The Greenbrier Classic in July.)
Our spouses even signed on to attend The Greenbrier Classic (a shocker as they all hate golf) when they found out that Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood would be performing in concert Saturday night for players, volunteers and guests of the resort.
While it's too early to speculate the makeup of the field, names like Daly, Love, and Couples are mentioned often.
And, while I’m not at liberty to divulge his name, my sources tell me that a certain lefthander who just received a jacket has verbally committed to play The Classic.
I can tell you on the record that Sergio Garcia has confirmed his participation. Now if only Tiger........
