Degrassi Season 9 Premiere

October 8, 2009 - Brandi Bowers
Ok, so this week I decided that there's a show that just doesn't get enough attention in my opinion... Degrassi. If you've seen it, then you know it's an excellent show. If you haven't, I highly recommend checking it out!

Degrassi is a half hour show that started in Canada. It ran from 1987 to 1991 under the titles, Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. It came back in 2001 as Degrassi: the Next Generation, and has been shown here recently in the United States. The show is kind of a cross between Saved by the Bell and Days of Our Lives, combining teenage angst and comedy. It is centered around both high school and college students, and at times can be really funny or really serious.

Remember when you were younger and you had to watch those horrible "after school" specials on how to deal with major life issues? I'll bet you wish you didn't. Well, Degrassi comes at those issues from a realistic point of view, and the reason I think it's so great is that you can appreciate the situations at any age.

Of course, my generation can also appreciate a couple special things about the show. For one, all the episodes are named after 80's songs (with the exception of a couple early episodes). How creative is that?! Another reason is that Kevin Smith, writer, director, actor, is a huge advocate of ths show, and has even appeared on it. I remember watching Chasing Amy and thinking, what are they talking about? They liked when Canadian girls said about (pronouncing it aboot). Well, luckily for me, the channel, The N came to our cable network, so I could be in on the joke. And by the way, if you're looking for Degrassi on The N, it has now been changed to Teen Nick. And, no, I have no shame in watching a channel with the word "teen" in it.

So, now that you're a little caught up on the show, you'll have to watch it this weekend. It is the premiere of the 9th season! Whenever characters graduate or move on, we are gradually introduced to new ones. From what I've read online so far, there will be 4 new characters this season: Jenna, Dave, Fiona & Declan (spelled correctly, lol). So be on the lookout for them. In the premiere, Jenna is supposedly becoming Claire's new best friend, pushing Alli aside. That will clearly be the secondary, not as exciting story. The main story will be about Mia's modeling career taking off and her boyfriend, Peter, stumbling into drugs along the way, trying to keep up with her new lifestyle. From the previews, it looks pretty intense! After all, the Degrassi motto is, "Degrassi... it goes there."
