Ann Coulter is what's wrong

January 7, 2009 - Paul Giannamore

Ann Coulter, the queen of the uber-conservatives, inadvertently summed up exactly what's wrong with the nation during her appearance on NBC's "Today" show Wednesday.

Coulter, in her usual "I'm smarter than you, so you must listen" style, appeared to promote her new book, "Guilty: Liberal Victims and Their Assault on America."

When asked why liberals and the "mainstream media" want to destroy America, Coulter responded, "Their motives? I'd have to be their confessor or psychologist to understand that. I'm describing the results."

Parse that one a bit. If one dares to have a viewpoint that is different from Coulter, it's not a matter of discussion. It's a matter of "destroying America."

Thus, every four years, we head to the polls, choose between the lesser of two shouting evils to be president and wonder where the heck the moderate in the middle is.

Makes me glad I'm apparently part of the "small tributary " media or the "downright backwater" media who can marvel at the boorishness and coarseness of what passes for national discourse has become.

Then again, why be upset? After all, Coulter's talk was followed shortly by an NBC News story and accompanying Internet photos of some poor schlub who fell off a ski lift and had his bare bum exposed to the world, and cell-phone cameras, for awhile. So, NBC being NBC, with all its mighty resources available, just HAD to show us the guy's butt. On national TV. It's as if our worst moments from high school are available for all the world to see always.

Or maybe it's just that Ann Coulter, like the school bully, gets all the attention she desires every time she fights with the folks on the Naked Butt Show, err-"Today"- on NBC.
