Time’s right for welfare reform

To the editor:

Today is the day America releases the leeches of the welfare system and places them into jobs to allow our economy to continue to prosper. This safety net of welfare was designed for the truly needy, created as a helping hand in 1935 — the era of the Great Depression.

America is no longer in a depression, in fact, this is the best the economy has been in decades and is the perfect time to be in the market for a job. There are a plethora of backdoors and loopholes to allow able-bodied adults to watch from the bleachers and collect the check. With the welfare reform, recipients of welfare would be required to find jobs within two years. There will be a five-year limit regarding the receiving of benefits.

Last, states can place “family caps,” which restrict a mother who gives birth to a child from receiving additional benefits while already on welfare.

As an undergraduate student, I urge President Donald Trump and members of Congress to make action on welfare reform and ultimately reduce taxes for the American people.
