City schools step up to help

To the editor:

During the most recent water break, which shut off all water to the downtown area, the Juvenile Court Detention Center had to make arrangements to resolve several issues.

Since the detention center houses anywhere from 15 to 20 juveniles (and there were 19 juveniles being detained at that time), the court was forced to bring in water and set up portable toilets because the center is a 365-day-a-year, seven-day-a-week, 24-hours-a-day operation.

While we handled all of those problems, we had one more issue, and that was allowing the juveniles to receive proper hygiene. We had to provide showers, which we no longer had available.

The court contacted Steubenville City Schools and spoke directly with Superintendent Melinda Young. Her response was, “We will do anything you need to help you for as long as is needed.” The school district was kind enough to not only allow us to use the shower at the athletic complex near Harding Stadium, but immediately set up the arrangements with their maintenance personnel so that there would be a smooth transition, since the juveniles needed to be transported in a safe manner.

Many times in this community, some people are negative about this area, yet it always has been this court’s observation that there are many helpful people who live in this community who are always willing to lend a helping hand to their fellow man when one was needed.

The court cannot thank Steubenville City Schools enough for the cooperation and assistance that they provided and were willing to provide for as long as the water shortage remained in effect.

A special thanks also to Mike Bauman, who not only came out on a Sunday to allow us access to the building, but also to plow the entire area, which was covered with 5 inches of snow prior to us arriving.

Thank you, again, to the Steubenville school administration and staff for everything they did for the court during this difficult time.
