Concert was true blessing

To the editor:

We were privileged in our small community to have exceptional artists give a concert. Kathy Troccoli and Michelle Margiotta performed for a capacity crowd at St. Paul’s Church in Weirton on Feb. 2. Tickets were given out ahead of time at no cost.

I wondered how it was that an artist of this caliber came to the small town of Weirton. Carrie Oliver, music director, announced that evening, before the concert started, that the evening was made possible by a former parishioner in a memorial fund that she designated to be used for music and the arts. Irene Kucan made it possible for many lives to be enriched and blessed that evening.

What a wonderful legacy it is when both in life and after your death you have been able to impact many lives through your generosity.

I had the privilege of meeting Kucan in a mentoring role as I was preparing for a speaking contest. I could tell by her surroundings, her dress and her overall demeanor that she was an intelligent woman and a person of great taste. We formed a lasting friendship, and I have many wonderful memories of the times we shared.

Kucan had many hardships in her life. One of them was that she lost a son through a tragic accident. None of those experiences dampened her spirit. She was a positive and encouraging person who shared her time, talent and gifts, not only with individual people, but with organizations and with her church.

I am fortunate to have known her personally, and her life and generosity are still having an impact and blessing the lives of other people. If you were at the Troccoli concert, you were one of them.
