Still time to help United Way

To the editor:

The United Way of Jefferson County is making a last push to meet its goal. Too many of us do not understand the purpose of the United Way.

In Jefferson County, the United Way collects funds that are distributed to 17 agencies which are too small generally to do fundraising on their own. They provide services to many people in need in their communities. These services include food pantries, shelter from domestic and child abuse, aiding the homeless, counseling and health services, senior citizen programs, emergency disaster services and youth services. Of the money collected, 97 cents of each dollar remains in the county. That figure is higher than for most organizations that are soliciting funds.

If each of us pledged $1 a week for the year, that would send $50 to the United Way of Jefferson County. A pledge of $5 a month would generate $60. Most of us could easily give up a cup of coffee each week to help our neighbors.

The 2017 campaign will be closing soon, but you still have time to make a difference in Jefferson County. Call the United Way office at (740) 284-9000 to make your pledge.
