Phrase remains a roadblock

To the editor,

America is one nation under a flag, a symbol, a Republic. Our Pledge of Allegiance promises “liberty and justice” for all, but there is a divide. That divide is “under God,” so oft used with little thought. It is difficult to argue the phrase as unconstitutional, as it does not expressly favor one religion, but it does acknowledge “God,” some creator in the midst. This was not in the original pledge, and was added in 1954 in retaliation to Communism. Nowadays, it seems more a plea to appease some majority in America, and a relic of old conflicts.

We are a nation of those who try ceaselessly to uphold liberty and justice, and still this phrase is a roadblock. It does not adequately reflect the full spectrum of Americans. We should focus on being a people whose similarities lie with freedom, with one another, and not worry ourselves with a God overseeing it all.

I hope we may consider the question, and keep going on our way toward a suitable solution to this heated issue.
