Event will battle breast cancer

To the editor:

On Oct. 4, the American Cancer Society will be fighting one of the top health concerns of women today – breast cancer – at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Jefferson. All funds raised from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer are restricted to breast health programs, services and research.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a non-competitive 5K walk that will take place beginning at Historic Fort Steuben in downtown Steubenville. The event will be a chance to honor the breast cancer survivors in our lives, reflect on those we’ve lost and fight back against a disease that has taken too many.

This event is new to the Jefferson County area and surrounding communities, and the American Cancer Society is asking for those within the community with a personal tie to breast cancer to step forward and help in the planning for this event.

A volunteer planning committee is being formed and will meet for the first time at Eastern Gateway Community College at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Barb Wilinski, event chairman, is joining me in asking anyone with the passion to fight back against breast cancer to join us as we welcome this event to Steubenville and beyond.

If you’re interested in joining the 2014 planning committee, or forming a team and becoming a team leader, contact me at Kyle.Elder@cancer.org. Our 2014 website is also live and available at www.MakingStridesWalk.org/Jefferson.

We can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with the handle @MSABCJefferson or using #MSABCJefferson.

Thanks in advance for your support of the American Cancer Society.

Together we can make a difference.
