Many help support fort

To the editor:

During the past 20 years, Historic Fort Steuben has grown from a few log structures to a block-long complex that has become an integral part of the community.

From tours of this unique historic site to educational programs to summer concerts, Historic Fort Steuben offers free or inexpensive activities for local residents as well as visitors. To maintain all the structures and programs requires funding, and that is why we have had several benefits this spring: the Support Your Fort Spring Concert, the Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Show and the Roarin’ 20’s Mystery Dinner. We have many people and organizations to thank for making these events a success:

Steubenville City Schools – for the use of the auditorium and the gym and the assistance from the wonderful staff, especially Shawn Crosier, Teddy Gorman and Lynn Meyer; Ron Retzer, John Balzano and his daughters (Spinning Jenny) and John DiCarlo and US Kids for sharing their talents; Gary Kessler and Steel Valley Tank, Mountaineer Racing and Gaming Resort, Schiappa and Co., Gus’s Goodies and Alan Hall for sponsorships.

The good sports who made up the Steel Valley Tankers team – Mike Haney, Mark Masloski, Jeff Lombardo, Phil Casinelli, Brian Pruitt, Larry Carrocci, Greg Bowers, Matt Davis, Donnie Price, Aly Cohen, Mary Ours, Ross Gallabrese, Suzanne Kresser, Vince Azzarello and state Sen. Lou Gentile, D-Steubenville; the team’s coach, Reno Saccoccia; the volunteer referees and scorekeepers; Tom Graham, who sang the national anthem; Pete Barren, who kept them all on their toes; Mark Nelson of Nelson Fine Arts for designing and donating the Steel Valley Tankers shirts; the Best Western Plus-University Inn; Cris Taylor and her creative acting ensemble and the staff of Froehlich’s Classic Corner; and the Steubenville Herald-Star and WTOV-TV for financial sponsorship, active participation and outstanding promotion of all our events – they are truly Steubenville Proud.

We must thank our staff, Judy Bratten and Mary Snyder, and all our faithful volunteers who gave hours of their time.

And, finally, I thank my hometown, Steubenville, for your support of all we do at Historic Fort Steuben. I hope to see many of you at our festival this summer, June 7 and 8.
