Second Amendment concerns

To the editor:

There is much hubbub over the interpretation of the meaning of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but we must bear in mind that at the time of the framing of the Constitution, it was unthinkable that a family should be rendered defenseless in its own home.

We must be very cautious in our interpretation of the Second Amendment. Remember, the amendment says “arms,” not guns. Guns are arms, but so are other things.

Take away the Second Amendment and you take away the right of people to own anything that might be used as a weapon – guns, swords, knives, baseball bats, broom sticks and so on.

To equate defenselessness with safety is ludicrous. The idea that no one is to be trusted and that everyone is a suspect is a symptom of the worst of tyrannies.
