Radakovich gave her time, talents

To the editor:

God gave Steubenville City Schools and the city of Steubenville a woman who is a true Christian in every sense of the word.

Margie Radakovich gave of herself to her students and their families, be it through teaching and watching a child achieve a goal in academics they thought they couldn’t do. I have heard her say “see what you can do when you say ‘yes, I can do it.'”

Radakovich made sure every child had a winter coat and a hot meal in their stomach even if she had to pay for it. She was there for her students – they were her children, her extended family. She loved to see them every day and greeted them with a warm smile and a “good morning” every day.

She never stopped giving, after school hours, if someone throughout the valley was sick and had not worked and needed help financially for their medical bills. You could see her on the weekends in the kitchen with her sister-in-law, Sam, and the staff of volunteers she gathered making her famous spaghetti sauce. When you were out in the city, be it a school function or a gala event in Steubenville and you heard the name Margie Radakovich, everyone smiled. To know Radakovich is to love her. She cared about our kids, the SCS staff and the people of Steubenville, and she left this world too soon because she had unfinished business – there were more children who needed her loving care and support.

I challenge each and every one of Radakovich’s friends, former students, SCS employees and those of you who did not know her to take a page from her life and do an act of kindness for someone. Take a minute and volunteer at a school and read with a child, or go to a store and buy a coat or shoes for someone who is in need. Take a bag of groceries and leave it on someone’s front porch without them knowing, because that’s what Margie did. Most of all, it’s what you do in this lifetime that takes you into the next. Show an act of kindness in her memory.

I feel blessed to have been a lifelong friend of Margie’s. She was my building principal for many years. I will miss seeing her around town, especially her cheering on her students. May Margie’s memory be eternal not only here on earth, but with our Lord and savior. Vjecnaja Pamjat.
