Special Olympians need your help
To the editor:
Many of you have read about the death of Bill Furioli. He was the heart and soul of the Brooke County Special Olympics. He and his family have provided an extraordinary service to the special needs residents of our community.
What you may not know is how much Special Olympics competitions cost. Just to charter one bus exceeds $2,800. Add the cost of lodging, uniforms and meals, and the total really climbs. All workers are volunteers, many hours are dedicated to practice sessions. No one gets paid except by the reward of seeing a smiling athlete.
The residents of Brooke County have been wonderful in their support of these athletes. Fundraisers are received with generosity.
Those of you who grew up in the Brooke County area can give back with your donation to the Brooke County Special Olympics. Donations can be sent to: Brooke County Special Olympics, c/o Sara Furoili, 1232 Charles St., Wellsburg, WV 26070. You also can contribute by attending the Bill Furioli Charity Football Game Saturday at the Brooke High School stadium. The cost is only $5.
Helen Furioli and her family are carrying on Bill’s tradition. It’s a great tradition. As Helen calls says, it’s a “special love.”
