Humane society thanks voters

To the editor:

The Jefferson County Humane Society recently held its Dueling Pianos fundraiser. This event was our most successful and profitable fundraiser, and on behalf of everyone at JCHS, I want to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the many businesses, sponsors and individuals whose support made this event such a success.

Thank you to all who supported this event, and please know that the Jefferson County Humane Society is your humane society. All money raised by JCHS goes directly to the care and protection of animals and animal welfare programs right here in Jefferson County. The board of directors, employees and volunteers are dedicated to the continuation of current programs and the implementation of contemporary and innovative programs to help homeless, neglected and abused animals right here at home.

County humane officers are employed by the county humane society. In 2012, your humane officers traveled more than 7,780 miles investigating 632 cases of animal abuse and neglect. The officers covered all areas within Jefferson County. To our supporters, thank you. It is only by your generosity that the help exists through JCHS to change the horrible and dreadful lives of countless animals. April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. If you suspect neglect or abuse, contact your local humane society. You may be their only hope.

We strive to bring affordable and convenient spay or neuter programs to everyone. Pet overpopulation is a crisis everywhere and we make every effort to make the procedure affordable. JCHS first hosted the low-cost spay and neuter R.A.S.C.A.L. mobile clinic in 2006 and has continuously hosted the clinic in Jefferson County on a regular basis. The clinics had been scheduled at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter for Saturday and today, and although this weekend was already booked, there will be additional clinics in June and October. Please spay or neuter your pets.

April is the second anniversary of the opening of the new Jefferson County Animal shelter. JCHS is very proud to have partnered with the Jefferson County commissioners to provide care for felines and additional programs at the animal shelter. The shelter is a wonderful place, and spring is a wonderful time to bring your family to the shelter to adopt a new family pet. If you are considering a new family pet, please visit your local animal shelters. There are many wonderful dogs and cats waiting for a new family and a new start in life.

We are pleased to have been invited to help the commissioners create a Manual of Standard Operating Procedures for operation of the Jefferson County Animal Shelter. We feel that implementation of operating standards are necessary for consistent, safe and humane operation of the Jefferson County Animal Shelter.

Again, all these programs and many others exist because of the generosity of the caring people and businesses that continue to support our efforts. We never lose sight of the fact that without your support, it would be impossible to maintain the level of care we presently employ.
