Mingo comes alive for community days

Mingo Junction will have something to sing about come this weekend’s annual community days.

Organizers have added an Idol Singing Contest, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, with two age groups of young people who will compete for cash prizes. Each contestant will sing one family friendly song.

Serving as judges will be Rose Angelica, a Mingo Junction resident, Nashville recording artist and Ohio Music Education Association judge, and Donna Cunningham, a Nashville recording artist and Century II Records talent scout and director of artist relations.

There are so many talented young singers in the area, and they now have a chance to perform in front of a talent scout.

The community days are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the downtown area.

In addition to the singing competition, the Saturday celebration will include a car cruise and parade and the Princess Aracoma and Little Chief Logan pageant.

The parade in downtown Mingo begins at 1 p.m.

The parade will feature the Indian Creek High School marching band, the Princess Aracoma and Little Chief Logan pageant contestants and Orin Diomedi as grand marshal.

Diomedi, who served as grand marshal for Mingo Junction’s Christmas parade in 1984, carried on the family business, Orin’s Auto Sales and Service, that has been in business at the same location for more than 80 years.

The Princess Aracoma, Little Chief Logan pageant begins after the parade.

Saturday’s live entertainment begins at 2:30 p.m. with the signing competition, followed by the Hank Vincent Stone Street Station; performances by Angelica and Cunningham; and Ann Flamingo opening for Elvis Presley Jr.

The Mingo Junction Business Association sponsors the community days, with assistance from area businesses.

Mingo Junction this weekend will open its doors to visitors for a good family outing.
